Volunteer tasks

Volunteers are needed at events to assist with various tasks, including audience and customer service, communications, first aid and medical care, as well as other support functions.

EVENT INFO AND CUSTOMER SERVICE 

VENUE AND STANDS 

The event info team works at the venue and on the grandstands. They welcome spectators and offer help and advice where needed, answering questions and directing spectators to the correct entrances and stands.  They also assist with activities in the Fan Zone and around the venue before and during games, as well as with the Opening and Closing Ceremonies and the Medals Ceremony. These roles require a friendly and flexible customer service attitude, a proactive approach, organisational skills, and fluent language skills (English and Finnish as a minimum). 

TICKETING 

The ticketing team is responsible for all customer service tasks relating to tickets, i.e. selling tickets on site, issuing pre-booked tickets to groups and guests. The role requires customer service skills, some IT skills, organisational skills, and fluent language skills (English and Finnish as a minimum). 

VIP AND GUEST SERVICES 

Duties include assisting with the practical organisation of VIP events and ensuring the comfort of guests at VIP events during the tournament. The VIP duties involve a great deal of customer service work, guidance and instruction of guests.  

The role requires customer service skills, ability to handle different situations, flexibility, quick problem solving and strong interpersonal skills. Candidates should have a fluency in English and Finnish, other languages would be an advantage. 

HOTEL INFO DESK 

The duties of the info desk in the team hotels include providing assistance and advice to teams, referees, commissioners and FIBA representatives. They also assist the event office and FIBA and local organising committee staff as required. The job requires good customer service skills, organisational skills, the ability to work under pressure, and fluent language skills (English and Finnish as a minimum). 

SUPPORT SERVICES 

ACCREDITATION 

The accreditation team issues and distributes event passes, i.e. accreditation cards. They will register and identify all attendees, take photographs of those to be accredited if necessary, and print, laminate and hand out accreditation cards. The role requires attention to detail, good customer service skills, and knowledge of at least fluent English. 

CONSTRUCTION AND MAINTENANCE 

The construction and maintenance team plays a key role in setting up the event before the game days, in maintenance work during the tournament and in dismantling after the tournament.  The team is responsible for setting up and furnishing the venues. Duties include installing furniture and signage, marking access routes, decorating the facilities and assisting with the receipt and delivery of goods and materials. This role requires an enthusiastic, proactive and flexible attitude and good physical condition. 

EVENT OFFICE 

The event office supports all activities related to the tournament and games in a variety of ways. The team provides help and support to all volunteer team managers and volunteers in their tasks. They also provide support to FIBA staff and the local organising committee. This role requires customer service skills, a proactive can-do attitude and language skills. 

CATERING AND LOUNGE 

This team is responsible for the smooth running of volunteer and media catering, as well as the service, atmosphere and cleanliness of the volunteer lounge. The role requires customer service skills and a can-do attitude with a smile. 

TRANSPORTATION 

The transportation team is responsible for the transport of referees, commissioners and invited guests during the matches, as well as airport transport (both Helsinki and Tampere airports). In addition to a valid driving licence, drivers must have sufficient knowledge of the Tampere area, a good knowledge of at least English and Finnish, and be polite and courteous. 

SUSTAINABILITY 

The sustainability team assists the Sustainability and Volunteer Manager in environmental and social responsibility matters. This role requires an interest in environmental and community issues, and a willingness to take on a wide range of tasks. 

GAME OPERATIONS 

BALL-BOYS & FLOOR SWEEPERS 

The duties of the ball-boys & floor sweepers team include mopping court floors to keep them clean and dry, retrieving balls, and distributing statistics prints during the games. A cheerful and energetic attitude is required. The team is also open to volunteers aged 15 and over. 

SERVICE TEAM 

The service team serve the teams at the venues. The team's tasks include water, towel and laundry service for teams during training and games as well as keeping the benches, courts and changing rooms clean during and after training sessions and games. This role requires organisational skills, an energetic can-do attitude, good physical fitness, and a basic knowledge of at least English.

TEAM HOSTS 

Each team has an appointed team host who acts as a contact person and assistant for the team. The role of the team host is to coordinate the team's daily programme in cooperation with the event office, hotel info desk, and transportation services. The team host is available to the team whenever needed, sometimes around the clock. They assist the team with all issues and needs related to the tournament and the city, such as getting around, finding attractions and other local issues. The team hosts are an important part of the team's activities and ensure that the team can focus on their best performance without having to worry about practical matters. They must have good organisational skills, the ability to work under pressure, a flexible customer service attitude, local knowledge, and fluency in languages, at least English, preferably the team's mother tongue. 

REFEREE AND COMMISSIONER HOSTS 

These hosts are the assistants for the referees and commissioners. Their role is to coordinate the daily programme of referees and commissioners in cooperation with the event office, hotel info desk, and transportation services. The referee host accompanies the referee team to and from the venue and assist the referee team at the venue. The host is required to have a good command of English and local knowledge. Other language skills are an advantage. 

GAME RECORDINGS SERVICE 

The game recordings service is responsible for ensuring that a recording of each game is made available to the teams, referees, FIBA and the local organising committee immediately after the game. The role requires strong IT skills, attention to detail, and a flexible customer service attitude. 

COMMUNICATIONS AND MEDIA SERVICES 

This team is responsible for a wide range of content production (text, images, videos, and social media channels), including post-game media formalities and assistance to media representatives. The role requires content production skills, an enthusiastic attitude, an understanding of multi-channel communications, social media skills, writing skills and/or photography skills. 

SAFETY & SECURITY  

In safety and security tasks you will enjoy pleasant encounters with customers, but the tasks also require a calm and competent approach, a steady customer service attitude, language skills, patience, and a certain amount of firm hand. 

SECURITY GUARDS 

They are responsible for the safe running of the games. The job requires valid permit or your written consent to act as a "temporary security guard". 

ACCESS CONTROL 

The role of the access control team is to check tickets at the entrances to the venue and to patrol the stands during games. 

FIRST AID AND MEDICAL CARE 

A court-level first aid team is in place at all games. In addition, the venue first aid team patrols around the venue and outside the hall during the games. 

ON-CALL DOCTOR 

The on-call doctor's duties include first-aid duties during games and training events in the players' emergency room or in the public area. They monitor training sessions and games and take the lead in any emergency situation. The on-call doctor must have a medical license or at least a bachelor's degree in medicine. 

ON-CALL NURSE 

The on-call nurse's duties include first aid duties during games and training events in the players' emergency room or in the public area. They monitor training sessions and games, and assist in situations requiring first aid. They are part of the first aid team, which is responsible for the safety and first aid of teams and spectators. The on-call nurse must have at least a basic training as a nurse or a paramedic.
